Waterproof or Water-Resistant? How to Protect Your Apple Watch in Any Condition

If you wear your Apple Watch during workouts, rainy runs, swimming sessions, or even while washing your hands, you’ve probably wondered — is my Apple Watch truly waterproof? And what’s the difference between waterproof and water-resistant anyway?

In this guide, we’ll break down what those terms actually mean, how water can affect your Apple Watch, and how you can properly protect it during all your water-based activities. Plus, we’ll share how Buckle & Band’s premium Apple Watch straps — especially our Mona and Hybri sports bands — can help you stay active without sacrificing style or safety.

Is the Apple Watch Waterproof?

Let’s get straight to the point: no Apple Watch is 100% waterproof — but most models are water-resistant to varying degrees.

Here’s the difference:

  • Waterproof implies total and permanent resistance to water under any condition — something no smartwatch on the market can claim.

  • Water-resistant means the device can withstand some exposure to water, such as splashes, rain, and in some cases, full immersion — but only to a specific depth and duration.

Apple Watch Water Resistance by Model

Apple has improved water resistance across generations. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Apple Watch Series 1 and 1st Gen: Splash-resistant, but not suitable for swimming or submersion.

  • Series 2 to Series 8, SE (2nd Gen): Water-resistant up to 50 metres (WR50) under ISO standard 22810:2010 — suitable for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean.

  • Apple Watch Ultra & Ultra 2: Water-resistant up to 100 metres and also EN13319-compliant (a standard for diving accessories). Suitable for high-velocity water activities and even recreational scuba diving up to 40 metres.

However, water resistance isn’t permanent. It can degrade over time due to normal wear and tear — especially if you expose the watch to soaps, shampoos, lotions, salt water, or high-pressure water (like jets in a hot tub or from a power washer).

What Apple Recommends (and What to Avoid)

To maximise your Apple Watch’s water resistance:

  • Rinse it with fresh water after swimming (especially in salt water or chlorinated pools).

  • Avoid exposing it to soaps, detergents, perfumes or acidic foods.

  • Don’t wear it in a sauna or steam room — high temperatures and humidity can damage seals.

  • Avoid high-impact water sports unless using the Apple Watch Ultra range.

If your Apple Watch gets wet, especially the speaker, use the Water Lock feature (available on Series 2 and later). This locks the screen and ejects water using sound vibrations.

Choosing the Right Strap for Water Use

Your Apple Watch might be water-resistant — but is your strap? Not all straps are created equal, and many traditional leather or metal bands aren't ideal for wet conditions.

At Buckle & Band, we’ve designed straps that look smart and perform hard — even in the wettest environments.

The Mona Strap – Luxury That Handles Sweat & Splashes

The Mona Apple Watch strap is crafted from a premium leather upper layer, fused with a durable silicone lining. This hybrid design offers the elegance of a traditional leather strap, but with enhanced sweat and water resistance. It’s perfect for those who want a refined look while staying active — whether you’re at the gym, on a paddleboard, or in a light rain.

Key Features:

  • Sweat-resistant silicone inner lining

  • Water-resistant outer layer

  • Sleek, fashion-forward look suitable for work and workouts

  • Easy to clean and quick-drying

Tips to Keep Your Apple Watch Safe from Water Damage

Here’s how to keep your Apple Watch in top condition, even if you use it around water every day:

  • Use Water Lock Mode before entering the water (swimming, showering, etc.)

  • Clean your strap regularly, especially after exposure to salt water or chlorine

  • Dry your Apple Watch thoroughly after exposure

  • Check for damage to the seals or digital crown regularly

  • Choose the right strap for your activity — a water-resistant strap is just as important as the watch itself

Final Thoughts: Stay Active, Stay Protected

Your Apple Watch is a brilliant companion for both daily life and adventure — but it deserves proper care. By understanding its water resistance limits and pairing it with a strap designed for water-based activities, like the Mona or Hybri from Buckle & Band, you can ensure your tech stays stylish and safe.
